Torriana is documented in archival texts already in 1144, perched on a rocky and uneven rock, in a strategic position to defend the important arterial road, connecting the coast to the Valmarecchia and then to Tuscany.
Malatesta original structure is still visible today in the gateway, the two circular towers, the tank, part of the walls incorporated in later buildings. The fortress is overlooked by the church dedicated to Saints Filippo e Giacomo that is located on the highest point of the mountain of Scorticata, the ancient name of Torriana.
